We discussed these questions and more late last year with CTO JP Morgenthal in an episode of The Skytap Podcast, titled, “What’s Your Cloud Strategy?” As enterprises start their cloud journeys, our own Dan Jones suggests that a more important question to be able to answer is, “What goals should IT have in order to satisfy business requirements, and what are the right tools and/or vehicles for that challenge?” For many enterprises, that curated collection of resources is only available in a multi-cloud adoption approach.
Gartner and Forrester have both predicted multi-cloud will continue to rise, and IDC has gone as far as to claim that by the time 2017 wraps up, “over 85% of enterprises will commit to multi-cloud architectures.”
So what’s leading to multi-cloud being the dominant approach to application modernization? If migrating to a single cloud provider is a huge technological, cultural and budgetary shift, wouldn’t managing a multi-cloud portfolio be an even greater challenge? Perhaps, but it’s the benefits that multi-cloud provides to greenfield applications and traditional, on-premises applications alike that make it the increasingly popular option for so many organizations.
